Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 Sunday – Ho Chi Minh City – Tra Vinh Arrive in Saigon pick up from airport and transfer a couple of hours out of Ho Chi Minh to My Tho – the gateway to the Mekong Delta. Today’s ride will lead you right into the heart of rural Mekong, as you pedal down narrow roads and lanes, past banana plantations and fields of sugarcane. A section of biking takes us off road onto gravel and dirt lanes, weaving through hamlets, across rivers and through quite thick vegetation, this makes for superb biking. A final ferry crossing takes to Tra Vinh a pretty tree-lined town with many ethnic Khmers. Cuu Long Hotel. Ride 40 km. B L D
Day 2 Monday – Tra Vinh – Can Tho Country lanes are the way we travel today to Can Tho – one the last towns to fall to the North Vietnamese and with a population mainly made up of Khmers. The lanes are lined with various palm trees to help with the shade and keep you cool. Also many traditional homes complete with coconut leafed roofs make to make this a fantastic ride. Day 3 Tuesday– Can Tho – Chu Doc We start the day with a trip to the Cai Rang floating market – where all manner of goods are for sale. After breakfast we have a short transfer by bus and ferry to start today’s cycling. The route today is peaceful and the road follows the Hau River which is scenic due to the lotus ponds and paddy fields. Along the small local roads there is plenty to see contrasting architectural styles of Khmer homes and temples to the rich and colourful river scenes when crossing many small bridges. Our cycling day ends at Phu Tan and from there is a short transfer to the hotel in Can Tho. Chau Po Hotel. Ride 85 km. B L D
Day 4 Wednesday Chau Doc – Kep A short transfer to the border crossing and on the way we have a chance to visit Sam Mountain which is home to dozens of Pagodas (some dating back to early 1800s) and temples and from the top of the mountain we have an excellent view over to Cambodia. After crossing the border it is a beautiful ride on rolling hills through rural Cambodia on a mixture of tarmac and dirt roads. Not many tourists cross at this point which will give this ride a more frontier feeling. Veranda Resort Ride 100 km. B L D
Day 5 Thursday Kep – Phnom Penh We head towards Kampot and then cycle towards Takeo. On the way to Kampot we can stop at Phnom Chhnork a small but well preserved temple inside a cave (involves a short walk across a paddy field). Once at Kampot it is tarmac all the way and we should make good time. From here it is about a 75 km transfer to Phnom Penh. Ride 95 km. B L D
Day 6 Friday– Phnom Penh to Siem Reap – Angkor temples After breakfast we travel to Siem Reap by a mixture of cycling and transfers. We will arrive in Siem Reap in the late afternoon for an introduction to Angkor temples by visiting Ta Prohm, famous from the film Tomb Raider, and deliberately left by French conservationists in the same condition as it was discovered; overgrown by strangler fig and silk-cotton trees, giving the temple a mystical and romantic appeal. We will then check into the Royal Crown Hotel. Ride 60km B L D
Day 7 – Saturday – Angkor temples The day will include 3 options i) To take buses with an expert guide around the temples of Angkor Wat and environs ii) To make the same tour by bike again escorted by expert guide (28km of easy cycling) iii) To have a rest day or make self tour The organized tours will continue to Angkor Thom, Bayon temple and the Terrace of the Elephants. After this it is time to explore the biggest Hindu edifice in the world – Angkor Wat. Considered the masterpiece of Khmer architecture, this Vishnuite temple is the King’s funerary temple, which is why the temple is orientated to the West. Inside the temple the walls are covered by carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign.
