Description
This is a unique cycle ride which in 3 to 4 days over a long weekend will provide a total Lake District cycling experience and just for 1 or 2 full days off work.

Everyone of the 12 natural and 2 man-made lakes plus innumerable tarns (small waters) will be visited and most cycled along their full length, on level cycling and yet through the most exquisite of scenery.

To connect the lakes between their 9 separate dales, we will cycle along a combination of remote and quiet country lanes and over 7 connecting passes of which 4 will be off road and all providing extensive panoramic views of lakes and mountains. The variety of scenery in an area of just 25mls diameter is probably unparalleled anywhere.

The off-road sections will provide an intensive experience using bridle paths which in by-gone years were packhorse routes. They will present challenging climbs which will often require walking bikes but with the reward of thrilling but non technical downhills – the very essence of mountain biking – with ever-changing magical views.

The route will pass through virtually every place of major interest – including centres such as Grasmere, Bowness, Keswick and Ambleside; dales such as Borrowdale with changing views of the high fells around every corner, Langdale with the famous views of The Pikes and the wilder Eskdale; several forest trails; notable road passes such as Honister, Wrynose and Hardknott with gradients reaching 1 in 4 and the wild off-road Black Sail Pass taking us up to 1900ft and right amongst the highest of the fells; and of course, lakes such as Windermere –the largest in England, pretty Grasmere, the more sombre Ullswater, wild Wastwater and the idyllic Derwentwater, to name but a few.

In 4 days riding we will cover 180mls of which 50 will be off road. Each day we will ride a maximum of 50mls of which up to 15mls will be real off-road experiences.

You can expect long hours of daylight and mid-June is normally blessed with relatively settled weather – any rain should be short lived and temperatures should be at least 15 degrees C during the day – very comfortable for cycling.

We will travel by train to Windermere in late afternoon on the Thursday. You will have the option of taking your own mountain bike (not hybrid) or to hire a good quality mountain bike in The Lakes. From accommodation nearby, we will commence cycling first thing Friday morning. On Saturday there will be an option to either cycle or walk with all of us meeting up in the evening. Both Sunday and Monday will be cycle days and we shall travel back by train in the evening on Monday.

Accommodation will be in a mixture of activity centres, cabins, small hotels or guest houses with breakfasts and dinners catered within such establishments but lunches prepared on the move by the support team.

There will be time to complement cycling with a steamer boat trip on one of the lakes and to ride the Ravensglass to Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway. There will also be an opportunity to be entertained one evening at an open air theatre, visit historic sites such as Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth's homes and of course stop at a couple of traditional lakeland tea shops.

This is a Ride not to be missed – challenging but not severe, yet giving most a new mountain biking experience that you will never forget!
