The Coast to Coast

The Coast to Coast, or C2C as it is endearingly known among cyclists, is now the most popular long distance cycling route in the UK. But while it may be one of the longest and the most challenging – at some 130 miles – it is also the most scenic.

This classic 3 day  ride embrace the northern English counties of Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham plus the conurbations of Tyne and Wear. The route through Cumbria snakes its way through  The English Lake District, arguably the most beautiful area of England, a land of craggy mountains, lush valleys, lakes and endlessly contrasting weather associated with the NW of England.

Between the Lakes and the Pennines lies the Vale of Eden –flanked by high ground on both sides, this is a peaceful pastoral area dotted with pretty villages and market towns. Further east, the Northern Pennines are wild and untamed, and typify English moorland, interlocking hills create a moody landscape which particularly on misty days has a magnetic affect. Cycling through this endless upland landscape is extremely therapeutic despite the constant ups and downs.

The eastern side of the moorland gives way to farms and communities which used to be surrounded by coalfields and steel works. Co Durham has its attractions with its villages still with the secret they hold onto as the cradle of the industrial revolution over 200 years ago. The contrast of the Industrial NE with the countryside on its doorstep is fascinating.

Although not strictly the coast, the finishing point of our ride is the Millennium Bridge on Newcastle’s fabulous waterfront, and is tidal so it is appropriate to celebrate with a well earned meal.
